Now I know that when it snows a lot of people go into a funk. Part of the reason for the funk is because one of our sensories gets diminished. Our sense of smell goes into hibernation mode. This is an important time to make sure that we are taking care of ourselves. Plenty of sleep, good food and lots and lots of fun, laughter, and good smelling items. Take the time to help your senses feel more alive. Take out some of your essential oils and experiment with them. Take your favorite say… wintergreen. Sprinkle some on cotton balls that you have placed inside a votive holder. Now place those holders close to your heating vent on the floor of the room you spend your most time in, you have an instant air freshener each time your furnace comes on.
Another great thing to do is take an old pot, one that you won’t use for anything but scenting your house as you don’t want any food to come into contact with this pot or else it will taste like whatever scent you are using. So depending on what you are trying to accomplish you will combine a series of items to enhance the smell in your house. A cinnamon stick added with apples and a dash of vanilla in a pot of water to simmer slowly on the stove. Please keep an eye on the pot so it does not run dry! Adding essential oils to the pot of water and having it slowly simmering on the stove is a great way to help increase our relaxation senses.
If you are experiencing colds and flu’s in your house use Eucalyptus in a pot of water to help disinfect your environment as well, help you open your passage ways so you can breath better, another scent that helps with this is sweet birch, wintergreen and spearmint or peppermint. Now remember if you are looking for relaxation scents then you need to be mindful that such scents as Orange, Lemon, Tangerine, Peppermint, Spearmint are all stimulating scents that are used to keep you awake, which is great during those 3 pm slumps. If you are having trouble sleeping then the scents you might try are Chamomile, Lavender, Neroli, Sandalwood, Patchouli, or a blend such as Calm or Relaxation.
Remember feelings of Winter do not have to be a negative thing. Just remember that you give yourself permission to take care of yourself in the best way you know how. Then start asking others around you how they take care of themselves and use the ones that work for you and leave the rest!
Happy first snow storm!
